I've been doing them on and off for a while, but my tinkering became a prominent hobby after I graduated from college. Moving to Silicon Valley helped, since there are plenty of places to get cheap parts, equipment, and weird old stuff.
I mainly use Atmel AVR 8-bit microcontrollers. I do my development on Linux with avr-gcc. I prefer to design my own circuits rather than use a hardware platform like Arduino. I have also had the unfortunate experience of working with the Handy Board, a truly horrible and outdated microcontroller platform. (Though it did earn me my robotics minor...) I used a PIC once, didn't really like it. An awful Windows IDE (MPLAB), a non-free C compiler (C18), and a parallel port programmer...can't say it was much fun.
